The "10x developer" meme has been around for decades. Some developers are just 10 times more productive than average ones.
I've updated that take: 10x developers exist. It's just 1000x now.
A developer who deeply understands AI tooling, who has refined their prompts and workflows over 14 months, who has built up libraries of ADRs and context files, who knows when to use which model — that developer is producing output at a rate that would have been physically impossible for any individual a year ago.
The gap between "developer who uses AI effectively" and "developer who doesn't" is wider than the gap between the mythical 10x developer and a 1x developer ever was.
This isn't hype. This is math. A 10x developer was a unicorn. Rare. Unteachable. Some people just had it.
But an AI-effective developer? That's learned. You can teach it. You can practice it. You can systematize it.
The real insight: the gap isn't intelligence or talent. It's adoption and methodology. The same person, with and without AI tooling, produces radically different output.
That's not 10x. That's transformative.
