I have a problem, yes. But who wouldn't pull the lever on a one-armed bandit that's spitting out wins left and right?
The metaphor is imperfect but not irrelevant. When something is working well, when the feedback loops are tight, when the results keep coming — there's a compulsive quality to it. You keep going. You keep trying. You keep building.
It's not irresponsible in the moment. It feels like momentum. It feels productive. The output is real. The code works. The features ship.
But at some point, you have to ask: am I building because it's right, or because I can? Am I shipping because the customer needs it, or because the machine never gets tired?
The machine doesn't get tired. It will keep pulling that lever all day. It doesn't have judgment. It has efficiency.
That gap — between efficient and right — is where wisdom lives. And that's entirely on me.
So yeah. I have a problem. But it's a good kind of problem to have.
